On August 14, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that a Syrian spy of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization, MİT, was killed and two others were captured during a recent raid by its fighters in the northeastern Syrian governorate of al-Hasakah.
The raid took place in the village of Tell Brak in the northeastern al-Hasakah countryside on August 11. In a statement, the SDF said that the three spies were all members of a single MİT cell.
“The cell … was involved in the martyrdom of many of our comrades and fighters, and it was spying in the Tell Brak and al-Qamishli area for the Turkish intelligence, MİT, and providing it with information about workers in the Autonomous Administration and others in civil, service and military institutions,” the statement reads.
The SDF added that the cell member who was killed during the raid, Aziz Muhammed al-Muhammed, resisted arrest and clashed with its fighters.
The raid was carried out in the framework of Operation Oath, which was launched by the SDF last year to root out Turkish spies from its areas of influence in northern and northeastern Syria. The operation is the group’s answer to recent Turkish drone strikes which claimed the lives of some its top military and security commanders.
The MİT ramped up its activities in SDF territory in the last few months. Around the same time, the Turkish military and its proxies began preparing for a new large-scale operation against the group.
Very recently, senior Turkish officials, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, talked about cooperating with the Syrian intelligence against Kurdish forces. Nevertheless, there is still no evidence confirming the presence of such a cooperation.
