SDF Says Its Fighters Repelled Turkish-led Attack In Northern Al-Hasakah

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on February 13 that its fighters had repelled a Turkish-led attack on their positions in the northern al-Hasakah countryside.

In a statement, the Kurdish-led group said that the attack targeted the towns of Arisha, al-Qasimiyah and al-Duadiyah near the town of Tell Tamr. Syrian militants took part in the attack that was apparently planned by the Turkish military.

The SDF’s Tell Tamr Military Council (TMC) repelled the attack within a few hours, killing at least nine Turkish-backed militants.

According to the SDF, the Turkish-backed militants wanted to occupy more areas in northern al-Hasakah and displace the locals.

Last year, the Turkish military and its proxies occupied a large swath of northeast Syria after an intense battle with the SDF. The attack was facilitated by the SDF main ally, the U.S. which withdrew its troops from the targeted areas.

The surprise attack in northern al-Hasakah violates two agreements Turkey reached with the U.S. and Russia. Ankara, that is facing a major setback in northwest Syria where the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is advancing, may be planning to re-escalate the situation in the northeast.

Wasn’t the SDF that group that the US just simply renamed to make them sound “democratic”? I vaguely remember some US Army commander talk about that in a clip on a TLAV podcast.

SAA – KURDS are allies .. good to see the weapons supplied to them are being used correctly

Al Qamishli and Hasakah are Christian majority areas that have never surrendered to ISIS or the SDF. The SAA has maintained its presence there throughout the war. I don’t know the boundaries, but my guess is that this confrontation took place when the US tried to enter a Syrian government area. The locals could see the star spangled Humvees coming and showed up to back up their Army. That’s why the photos of military trucks, some with Syrian, some with Russian and some with American flags.
