On April 26, a senior commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) security unit, known as Asayish, survived an assassination attempt in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

According to Naher Media, an improvised explosive device (IED) struck the commander’s vehicle in the town of Jadeed Bakkarah.

“The IED exploded on the main road in the town of Jadeed Bakkarah, it targeted a commander of the SDF’s Asayish, Fuaz al-Kurdi, known as Abu Hammam al-Qadisiyah, however, the damage was limited to materials, according to an eyewitness from the town’s residents,” the local outlet’s report reads.

No group has claimed responsibility for the assassination attempt. ISIS remains the main suspect as its cells are known to be active in this part of Deir Ezzor. Earlier this week, the terrorist group assassinated the SDF’s fuel official in the governorate there.

Nevertheless, some opposition sources said that the pro-government National Defense Forces (NDF) may have been behind the assassination attempt. During the last few weeks, the NDF was involved in a series of clashes with Asayish in the city of al-Qamishli.

The SDF and the U.S.-led coalition are yet to take measures to address the deteriorating security situation in southeast Deir Ezzor.
