On July 20, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) concluded the second stage of Operation Deterring Terrorism in northeastern Syria.
The second stage, which started on July 17, targeted ISIS cells in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. A series of raids and combing operations were carried out in the region, mainly in the Middle Euphrates Valley.
In an official statement, the SDF listed the results of the second stage of Operation Deterring Terrorism as follows:
- A total of 31 ISIS terrorists and suspects were apprehended;
- Loads of weapons, including rifles, rocket launchers and improvised explosive devices were seized;
- A large ammo depot of ISIS with 2,000 mortar shells was uncovered.
The SDF launched Deterring of Terrorism Operation on June 4. The first stage, which targeted ISIS remnants between al-Hasakah and Deir Ezzor, was completed on June 10.
The U.S.-led coalition supported this operation by providing intelligence and aerial support. Coalition troops even took part in some counter-terrorism raids which were carried out in the framework of the operation.
The Operation led to a significant improvement in the security situation in northeastern Syria, especially in eastern and southeastern Deir Ezzor. However, ISIS threat in the region is still far from being over.
