On November 17, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) shared the details of a recent security operation that thwarted a plot to storm a prison in al-Hasakah city where hundreds of ISIS captives are being held.

The operation, which took place on November 8, targeted a dangerous cell of ISIS that was tasked with storming the unidentified prison.

In the course of the operation, special forces from the SDF and the US-led coalition clashed with the cell’s members who attempted to flee. One of the terrorists was killed, another was wounded and two others were captured.

US-led coalition warplanes also destroyed the cell’s main compound where a car bomb that was prepared for the attack on the unidentified al-Hasakah prison was hidden. The SDF Press Center released footage of the airstrike, which was allegedly carried out after evacuating all civilians from the operation’s area.

Hundreds of ISIS captives, many of whom are foreigners, are being held at two SDF-run prisons in al-Hasakah city, the Industrial Secondary Prison and the larger Geweran Prison.

In the last few months, ISIS captives organized several mutinies at the poorly-guarded prisons. This likely encourage the terrorist group to put a plan to free its members. The last such mutiny took place at the Industrial Secondary Prison on October 27.
