On January 14, a VBIED of ISIS targeted positions of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) inside the town of Gharanij in southeastern Deir Ezzor, according to the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq.
The media outlet claimed that 20 fighters of the SDF were killed or injured and four vehicles were destroyed in the VBIED attack.

Amaq also reported that ISIS fighters killed eleven fighters of the US-backed force after targeting two positions of the SDF inside Gharanij and around the village of al-Bahra with ATGMs. A Humvee of the SDF was also destroyed by ISIS with a rocket-propelled grenade, according to the ISIS-linked news agency.

Earlier, Kurdish sources claimed that SDF fighters were able to secure most of Gharanij town. However, the new wave of ISIS attacks inside the town confirm that these claims were false.
Lately the US-backed force suffered from some setbacks in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside, as it failed to capture the towns of Hajin and Gharanij although the attack on ISIS there was launched in December 2017.
As SDF forces are being redeployed from Raqqa towards Manbij, Afrin, it will be IS profiting to some extent. Wil make Erdogan happy to please his (and Assads) IS buddies.
What it doesn’t please you, well this happens when you force Teachers and Former government workers to go fight. Just that at the heart Kurds don’t want to fight their ISIS brothers so they send in Arabs, Syriacs , etc. with a handful of heavy weapons. Seems more of them is getting fed up with the PKK/YPG Kurds there and the US, things I have been saying are true about what’s going on.
Stop blaming Erdogan and Assad for these issues, besides the point that IS is no ones buddies but HTS and their allies. The US and Turkey are doing some games here as they know that Idlib will fall and Erdogan will bluster until mid march. They are trying to create a reason for US to move troops to this region to help Turkey out in Idlib and steal more land Afrin will be sacrificed to ISIS and it’s HTS allies.
The SAA have defeated ISIS in Syria – they fought ISIS all way across Hama to break the siege of Dier Ezzore city. The SDF just subsequently rode on the coat-tails of the SAA operation – when the SAA engaged ISIS in Deir Ezzore then and only then did SDF advance south knowing the SAA was doing the real fighting against the bulk of ISIS force. The SDF actually bused the hardcore ISIS members out of Raqqa and allowed them free passage deep into central Dier Ezzore – expecting these ISIS fighters would regroup and redirect against the SAA. SDF have repeatedly proved themselves as mere opportunists in conflict not actual fighters.
Sure, Iranian proxy forces defeated IS, west of the Euphrates, to some extent. There are still large pockets in the Badiya, near Damascus and, supported by Assad, in southern Idlib.
SDF let some IS go, sure. Just like Turkey did, just like Assad did in Arslan and numerous other places. Assad even has a structural policy and program of letting Islamists and jihadis go.
You know, fuck it. I’ll probably get arrested for this but I’m really starting to admire these guys. Their sheer determination and resilience is really something to behold.

Strange how fast SDF could move against ISIS when the SAA went from Deir Ezzor to the Iraqi border, but now that SAA are cut off the SDF just leave ISIS alone (for weeks now). I guess the US can’t justify their presence in Syria if ISIS are gone. Back to the same game as under the Obama regime (“fighting” ISIS while ISIS only got bigger).

By eliminating ISIS their presence is no longer justified…this is why all these “setbacks” occur to the Kurdish forces.

Amid and against the background of the urgent redeployment of SDF forces towards Afrin and Manbij, TFS have done some probing attacks there. SDF seized a first TFSA tank there. If Turkey and TFSA attack the two regions, let us hope not, it will provide SDF lots of opportunities to seize more heavy arms.
