On September 9, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Force (SDF) targeted a base of the Turkish military near the village of Bab al-Faraj in the northern countryside of Syria’s al-Hasakah with an anti-tank guided missile.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the missile attack was carried out by fighters from the SDF’s Tell Tamer Military Council. The attack resulted in casualties, according to the London-based monitoring group, which didn’t provide any further details.
Earlier, the Turkish military and its proxies shelled the SDF-held towns of Umm al-Kif and al-Dardara in the northern al-Hasakah countryside. The SDF’s missile attack was likely carried out in response.
Turkey escalated its artillery and drone strikes against SDF territory in northern and eastern Syria in recent weeks. It also allowed its proxies to launch attacks against the group in several directions, from the northern Aleppo countryside to the northern Raqqa countryside and the northern countryside of al-Hasakah, under the pretext of supporting Arab tribes who were waging an armed uprising in Deir Ezzor.
These moves led to much tensions with the SDF, which is apparently preparing to escalate against the Turkish military and its proxies after cracking down the uprising in Deir Ezzor.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has not commented yet on the Bab al-Faraj base attack. The ministry usually acknowledges any fatalities and launches retaliatory strikes within 24 hours. The attack could lead to a serious escalation in northern and eastern Syria.
