On August 28, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) began combing the second section of the notorious al-Hawl camp in northeastern Syria in the framework of the second phase of the security-humanitarian operation they launched four days earlier.
Thousands of troops from different security and military units of the SDF are taking part in the operation, which is meant to secure al-Hawl. The camp hosts tens of thousands of people, including relatives of ISIS terrorists and suspected members of the group.
While combing the second section of al-Hawl, SDF fighters uncovered a tunnel that was dug by ISIS members as well as several hideouts of the terrorist group.
A day earlier, the SDF concluded its operations in the first section of the camp where a number of suspected terrorists were arrested.
ISIS presence in al-Hawl is not discreet. For the past four days, SDF fighters have been facing attacks from the terrorist group’s members while operating inside the camp. Some of the camp’s residents were also attacked by the terrorists for cooperating with the SDF.
The situation in al-Hawl has been slowly spinning out of control. The first phase of the SDF’s security-humanitarian operation, which was conducted last year, failed to secure the camp. Since the end of the first phase, ISIS members have killed 44 of the camp residents, including 14 women and two children.
The SDF is well-aware that the ongoing operation won’t end ISIS presence in al-Hawl. The group called for the dismantle of the camp on several occasions in the past. In order to do this, foreigners, who cause most of the problems, must be sent back to their countries. However, many countries, mainly in the West, are still refusing to cooperate.
