On June 4, hundreds of civilians took to the street in the town of al-Shaddadi in the southern al-Hasakah countryside to protest against poor living conditions in the area.
According to Zaman Alwsl, a pro-opposition outlet, around 300 protesters blocked all roads inside al-Shaddadi and called on the self-administration in northern and northeast Syria to provide bread, fuel, gas and electricity. Furthermore, the protesters stoned the town’s civil council building and chanted “where is the oil money?”
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) security body, Asayish, clashed with the protesters. The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) claimed that security forces opened live fire at the protesters killing one and injuring three others. These claims are yet to be verified.
Al-Shaddadi is reportedly lacking most public services. The prices of electricity and bread increased recently. The town is also suffering from shortage of water.
The self-administration appears to be paying less attention to Arab areas in Deir Ezzor, Raqqa and al-Hasakah. This is leading to tensions between the administration and the locals.
