The Bavarian leader expressed interest in creating closer ties with Putin’s government.
Horst Seehofer, Bavarian Prime Minister and leader of CSU (Christian Social Union) claimed that the world, more precisely Germany can’t solve major conflicts of these times without Russia’s cooperation. This statement was made in the frame of the party congress held in Munich on Saturday, where he was ratified as leader of CSU.
Seehofer is looking forward to enhance cooperation with Russia, for that reason an official meeting with President Putin is scheduled for 2016.
The head of CSU also inferred that despite Western sanctions imposed to Russia, friendly ties with the US wouldn’t be at risk. According to Seehofer, who has been defending this position for a long time, it is a fact that nowadays’ major political conflicts won’t get solved without Russian intervention
Also, during the party congress in Munich, he ratified his position that a change regarding the open-door policy for refugees needs to be made, since Bavaria has received until now about 500 000 refugees and migrants since September. Bavaria, bordering Austria has become the gateway for a big number of asylum-seekers.
Chancellor Angela Merkel, from CSU sister party CDU (Christian Democratic Union) stated that Germany can and will continue to give support for those in need, claiming that the roots of the refugee crisis need to be fought, namely the IS (Islamic State), in order to secure the EU’s external borders and to thwart human traffickers.
