Early on September 14, a senior officer of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) was killed when two Palestinian gunmen opened fire as soldiers attempted to apprehend them near the West Bank security barrier.

The IDF said that soldiers operating surveillance cameras spotted two suspects in the so-called seam zone between the occupied West Bank and Israel, near the Palestinian village of Jalamah. Troops dispatched to investigate encircled the pair in an attempt to apprehend them. However, the suspects opened fire.

The two Palestinian gunmen were killed in the firefight. They were identified as Ahmed Abed and Abdul Rahman Abed, from the village of Kafr Dan near Jenin. Ahmed was an officer in the Palestinian Authority security services.

The IDF confirmed the death of one of its officers several hours after the firefight. The officer was later identified as Major Bar Falah from the coastal city of Netanya. He served as the deputy commander of the army’s elite Nahal reconnaissance unit.

The firefight occurred near the scene of another shooting attack took place less than 24 hours earlier. The attack targeted an engineering vehicle of the IDF. No casualties were reported.

Following the deadly firefight, Israeli Defense Minister Gantz orders the closure of the Jalamah checkpoint until further notice. The ministry also orders to halt entry permits to Israel for the residents of Kafr Dan, the hometown of the two Palestinian gunmen.

IDF troops repeatedly came under fire while counducting raids in the West Bank in the last few months. The raids began following a series of deadly attacks that killed 19 people between mid-March and the beginning of May.

Israel has been responding to attacks in the West Bank by tightening security measures targeting Palestinians more and more. This policy is clearly not working.
