The Libyan National Army (LNA) announced on September 13 that one of its senior commanders was assassinated in a Turkish unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UAV) strike.

The airstrike claimed the life of the Colonel Abdul Wahab al-Maqri, commander of the 9th Brigade Tarhuna, along with his two companions Captain Mohsen al-Kani and soldier Abdul-Azim al-Kani.

“They were killed today, Friday … As a result of a Turkish drone airstrike south of the capital, Tripoli,” the LNA said in an official statement.

Some sources claimed that the airstrike targeted a headquarters, where Col. al-Maqri and his two companions were stationed, while others said that the commander’s car was struck.

A day earlier, the LNA foiled an attack on the al-Jufra Air Base in central Libya. Forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) planned to storm the base with support from Turkish UCAVs.

The failed attack and the assassination of Col. al-Maqri show that the GNA’s allies, mainly Turkey and Qatar, are working to increase pressure on the LNA.
