On October 23, a senior member of the newly-formed Palestinian armed group Lion’s Den was assassinated in the West Bank city of Nablus.
Tamer Kilani was killed early in the morning when an explosive device attached to a motorcycle detonated in Nablus’s Old City. Security camera footage showing an unidentified man planting the bomb and the blast that claimed the life of Kilani surfaced online.
In a statement, the Lion’s Den held Israel responsible for the assassination. The group threatened a “painful response,” and called on the public to attend Kilani’s funeral.
The Israeli military didn’t comment on the assassination. However, military officials said that Kilani, who was previously jailed in Israel, was directly involved in sending a Palestinian man to attempt to commit a “large-scale” attack in Tel Aviv last month, among several more shooting attacks in the Nablus area.
The Lion’s Den was established in August in Nablus’s old city by members of various Palestinian parties, including the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Since then, the group has claimed responsibility for the majority of shooting attacks in the area.
The group, which is not very organized, is believed to consist of several dozen members, most of whom are young and secular. This makes it very different from larger Palestinian armed groups, which are mostly Islamic in nature and very well organized.
Earlier this month, an Israeli soldier was killed near the settlement of Shavei Shomron in the occupied West Bank in a shooting attack that was carried out by Lion’s Den member.
The assassination of Kilani could lead to more violence in the West Bank and even Jerusalem. The Lion’s Den and other Palestinian armed groups will likely step up their attacks on Israeli troops and settlers.
