On September 2, a delegation of senior Syrian officers visited the southern part of Daraa city, known as Daraa al-Balad, to inspect the situation and monitor the implementation of the new reconciliation agreement.

The delegation, which was accompanied by officers from the Russian Military Police and local leaders from Daraa al-Balad, was led by Major General Hossam Louka, head of the Security Committee in Daraa, and Brigadier General Louay Al-Ali, head of the Military Intelligence Directorate local branch in the southern governorate.

During the visit, Syrian officers inspected several positions where Syrian Arab Army troops will be deployed in the upcoming few days.

Russia brokered the reconciliation agreement between Syrian authorities and local leaders in Daraa al-Balad on August 31. A unit of the Russian Military Police was deployed in the area to implement the agreement on September 1.

Local gunmen who decided to stay in Daraa al-Balad and join the reconciliation process continue to hand over their guns to Syrian authorities.

Much progress was made in the last 72 hours. Nevertheless, the situation in Daraa al-Balad remains unstable and the crisis there is still far from being over.

According to some local sources, some of the wanted gunmen holding out in Daraa al-Balad are refusing to hand over their weapons or leave the area. The gunmen are also making unrealistic demands in what appears to be an attempt to sabotage the new reconciliation agreement.
