Seven Israeli troops were killed on June 24 in one of the deadliest attacks to target the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the Gaza Strip this year.
The IDF said in a statement acknowledging the attack that all the troops served with the 605th Combat Engineering Battalion.
According to an initial IDF probe, a fighter of the Hamas Movement, which rules Gaza, planted an explosive device on the soldiers’ Puma armored combat engineering vehicle (CEV) while they were driving in the city of Khan Younis in the southern part of the Strip.
The blast immediately set the CEV on fire. All the troops inside perished in the blaze. The burnt remains of the CEV were later retrieved.
The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, later confirmed that it was behind the deadly attack in Khan Younis, without releasing any footage.
In a separate incident that took place in Khan Younis on the same day, two soldiers of the 605th Battalion were wounded, one seriously and one lightly, by a rocket-propelled grenade fired at a D9 armored bulldozer they were operating.
The latest deaths brought the number of Israeli troops killed since the start of the large-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza, codenamed “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” to 21. In total, Israel has lost 440 troops, police officers and contractors since the start of ground operations in the Strip and along its borders more than a year ago.
Israel launched Operation Gideon’s Chariots last month after calling up tens of thousands of reservists. The IDF stated at the time that it wants to occupy 75 percent of Gaza within two months.
Faced with mounting losses and growing international pressure, Israel may now be preparing to back down, at least temporarily.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari told CNN on June 25 that the ceasefire between Israel and Iran has created momentum for a new deal in Gaza.
“This is the time now for [United States] President Trump to push for it and we believe he is sincere about it… We are willing to help on that,” the spokesman said.
“There was momentum created by the ceasefire in Iran and Israel,” he added, “but we’re not out of the woods yet. There are a lot of details that I can’t discuss right now about the deal in place but I can tell you it’s the same parameters that keep going in and out of the talks.”
Of course any new deal won’t mean the end of the Israeli war on Gaza. Israel will likely see it as a temporary pause to free some of its remaining hostages and prepare the IDF for the next push.
