Ship Reports Attack In Red Sea As U.S. Announces More Strikes Against Houthis

British security firm Ambrey said early on July 12 that a merchant vessel reported two explosions about 21 nautical miles west of the Yemeni Red Sea port of Mokha.

One “missile” impacted the water and another exploded in the air, the vessel reported to Ambrey, adding that both explosions occurred within 0.5 nautical miles of the vessel.

“The vessel was withholding its automatic identification system transmissions at the time. Ambrey is investigating the vessel’s affiliations with the Houthi target profile,” the Ambrey said in an advisory notice.

The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen have not yet acknowledged the attack reported by the Ambrey, though it typically takes them a few days to issue a claim.

Earlier, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said that its forces destroyed five uncrewed boats and two drones of the Houthis in the Red Sea. An additional drone was hit in a Houthi-controlled area in Yemen, according to the command.

“It was determined these systems presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” CENTCOM said. “These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters more safe and secure.”

The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea since November in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group, but to no avail.
