On January 25, ISIS cells in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula targeted a Humvee armored vehicle of the Egyptian military with a heavy improvised explosive device (IED) as it was passing to the west of the city of Bir al-Abd.
Egyptian news sources confirmed that the IED attack claimed the lives of five Egyptian service members, who were identified as: Cpt. Mohamed Atef, Cpt. Ayman Mohamed al-Sayed; Sgt. Mohammed Rashid; Pvt. Muhammad Tharwat; Pvt. Walid Tariq.
ISIS news agency, Amaq, released on January 28 footage showing the aftermath of the deadly attack, which left the targeted vehicle completely destroyed.

ISIS cells in Sinai have been relying on IED attacks as a low-cost, low-risk tactic to inflict serious losses on Egyptian government forces.
The Egyptian military, security forces and tribal forces conduct operations against ISIS’ remaining cells in the Sinai Peninsula on a regular basis. The terrorist group has been waging an insurgency in the strategic region for more than eight years, with no end in sight.
