On May 18, ISIS cells in the Sinai Peninsula shelled a post of the Egyptian military near the al-Ajra checkpoint, to the east of the city of al-Arish, with mortars.

The terrorist group’s news agency, Amaq, shared photos of the attack, in which a total of five mortar shells were fired at the military post. The terrorists in Sinai rarely use heavy weapons like mortars in their attacks.

According to Amaq claims, a number of Egyptian service members were wounded as a result of the mortar attack. No details were provided.

ISIS cells have been waging an insurgency against Egyptian government forces in Sinai since November of 2014. In the last few years, the group’s activities in the peninsula saw a slow decline.

Some of the terrorists’ weapons were captured from government forces and tribesmen. However, most of the weapons were smuggled from war-torn Libya, or even from the neighboring Gaza Strip. Government forces succeeded in limiting smuggling operations in Sinai in the last few years.
