On 9 January 2025, the Russian army successfully completed the assault on Kurakhovo. On 10 January, the Russian Defence Ministry officially announced this after mopping up the western suburbs.
Kurakhovo is a large city in the Pokrovsky district of the former Donetsk region of Ukraine. Before the armed conflict, 18,000 people lived in the town. 70% of the population identified themselves as Russian.
After a month of active fighting, the town was practically left undamaged. Some 4,000 residents remained in their homes. Russian units tried to minimise damage to the town’s civilian infrastructure. The Ukrainian authorities, for their part, dismantled almost all the industrial equipment of the town’s enterprises, including the thermal power plant, and moved it to their rear even before the attack began. At the same time, as Russian servicemen from the “Yug” (“South”) military grouping testified, Kurakhovo was completely unprepared for a multi-layered defence. The nature of the behaviour of the conflicting parties in the battle for Kurakhovo clearly shows who was the real occupier of this land.
On 12 January, the situation in the town was calm. The Ukrainian forces continued to retreat, leaving the Russian army free to advance.
On 11 January, soldiers of the 10th Tank Regiment of the 20th Division of the Russian Army raised the Russian flag in the village of Yantarnoye, 3.5 km south-west of Kurakhovo. And advanced another 1.5 kilometres along the northern bank of the Sukhiye Yaly River.
To the north-west of Kurakhovo, units of the 114th Motorised Rifle Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces occupied the important settlement of Shevchenko, located 7 km from the town.

This settlement was used by Ukrainian units to fire mortars at the town of Kurakhovo. In the fighting for Shevchenko, the AFU lost a German-made Leopard tank and several US-made M113 APCs. Establishing control over Shevchenko opens up the prospect of the Russians breaking through to the settlement of Andreevka and closing the Kurakhovo cauldron near the villages of Konstantinopol and Ulakly along the N-15 highway.
In order to completely suppress the mortar fire on the city, Russian assault troops will also have to squeeze or destroy AFU units from the village of Dachnoye.
Today, the morale of Ukrainian soldiers in the area is extremely low. The fighting at Kurakhove was marked by the mass surrender of Ukrainian prisoners of war. For example, a captured Ukrainian soldier, Vasyl Krakhmal, spoke on behalf of a group of AFU POWs about how they were unable to withstand the rapid onslaught of Russian troops during the storming of the town, and in a group of 19 people decided to surrender to the Russian fighters in order to save their lives.
The prisoners reported deception by AFU commanders, inadequate provision of weapons and food, and little or no training. Some soldiers found themselves on the front line 2 weeks after mobilisation.
This situation arose in the first week of 2025. Earlier, the Kiev regime had brought in large forces, including nationalist formations and foreign mercenaries, reinforced with artillery and tanks, to defend the city. These included units of the elite 79 Airborne Assault Brigade and 46 Airmobile Brigade, as well as the 5 Heavy, 33 and 157 Mechanised Brigades. In total, the AFU command has concentrated 26 battalions with a total strength of over 15,000 troops to hold Kurakhovo.
The Russian Defence Ministry stated that as a result of the professional actions of Russian troops during the liberation of Kurakhovo, the AFU lost 80 per cent of its personnel (more than 12,000 people) and about 3,000 units of various weapons and military equipment, including 40 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles.
With the liberation of Kurakhovo, the Russian army has almost completely cleared the entire southern Donetsk direction of AFU presence. The last major settlement that remains under Kyiv’s control here is Velikaya Novoselka. It is a village on the border between the DPR and the Zaporizhzhya region of Ukraine, located on the so-called Vremevsky Protrusion, which was formed here during the AFU counter-offensive in the summer and autumn of 2023.

At the moment it is being pinched and cut off from supply lines. It is bypassed from the north by Novy Komar, from the east by Shakhterskoye and Zolotoy Niva, and from the south by Storozhevoye and Blagodatnoye. After the liberation of Velyka Novoselka, the ridge will be cut off. Kyiv will thus lose all the few territorial gains it achieved during its well-publicised counteroffensive.
With the entire south of the former Donetsk region of Ukraine under control, the Russian army will be free to move on to other parts of the front. The logical continuation of the liberation of Kurakhov should be the Pokrovsk operation. So far, the Russian grouping “Tsentr” (“Centre”) has not touched Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk). The city has a population of 60,000. A frontal assault on the city could result in heavy casualties. As a result, Pokrovsk, like Ugledar and Kurakhovo before it, is being encircled, cut off from supplies and reinforcements. By all appearances, the fate of this city has already been decided. All that remains for the Kiev regime is to demonstrate activity in Russia’s Kursk region in order to justify continued military support from NATO.
