Late on July 19, six officers of the Iraqi Federal Police (IFP) were killed and seven others were wounded when ISIS terrorists attacked a post they were manning in the northern Iraqi province of Saladin.
Between 10 and 15 terrorists attacked the post which is located in an area in eastern Saladin known as Mutaibija. ISIS cells are known to be present and active in the remote area.
“ISIS elements used snipers and medium-caliber weapons to attack a post belonging to the 4th Regiment of the IFP 5th Division’s 17th Brigade in the area of Mutaibija in Salah al-Din province,” an unnamed Iraqi security official told Sputnik, noting that “some of the wounded suffer serious wounds.”
Following attack, Iraqi security forces dispatched reinforcements to Mutaibija and launched a combing operation in the area. The scene of the attack was visited by a high-ranking security delegation included the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, the Commander of the IFP and the Commander of the Land Forces.
This was ISIS’s deadliest attack in Iraq in several months. In a statement, the Iraqi Security Media Cell said that the terrorists responsible for the attack will be punished.
The attack came following a series of successful anti-terrorism operations by the Iraqi military, intelligence and security forces. The operations inflicted heavy losses on ISIS cells. Yet, the terrorist group’s threat in Iraq, especially in the northern and western regions, remains a serious one.
