Late on June 5, fighters of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) attacked positions of Turkish-backed militants near the town of Ras al-Ain in northeastern Syria.
SDF fighters passed the defences of Turkish-backed forces in the area of al-Arish in the vicinity of Ras al-Ain then engaged in heavy clashes with the militants.
A source in the Syrian National Army (SNA), an umbrella group for Turkish-backed militants, told the Istanbul-based Syria TV that four militants were killed and three others were injured during the clashes with the SDF.
According to the source, the SDF also lost two of its fighters. At least five others were injured in the attack, which was deemed a “failure” by the source.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed that the slain militants were all fighting in the ranks of the SNA’s Hamzah Division.
Earlier this week, Hamzah Division militants clashed with each other in Ras al-Ain. As a result, at least three militants were killed and seven others were injured. Stray fire also wounded four civilians, including a woman.
The 2019 Turkish invasion of northeastern Syria destabilized the region and led to the creation of a new front between Kurdish forces and Turkish-backed militants. This front will not cool down any time soon.
