Southern Syria: Tafas Militants Sabotage Reconciliation Agreement And Join ISIS

Support SouthFront

On July 1, fighters of the US-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the town of Tafas have sabotaged a reconciliation agreement with the Damascus government and have pledged their allegiance to the ISIS-affiliated Khalid ibn al-Walid Army, according to the Lebanese al-Mayadeen TV.

A day earlier, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Tafas, which located in the western Daraa countryside, will join the reconciliation process. Units of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Russian Military Police were supposed to enter the town in the upcoming hours.

A source in the SAA, who is stationed in the nearby town of Da’il, told SouthFront that thousands of civilians and FSA fighters have fled Tafas after the failure of the reconciliation agreement. These civilians are currently hiding in the farms around the town as they fear the revenge of the radical militants.

In response to this dangerous development, warplanes of the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) and the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out more than 14 airstrikes on the positions of the radical militants in Tafas, according to Syrian opposition activists.

The SAA and its allies will likely launch a ground attack on Tafas soon in order to prevent ISIS from expanding in the western and northern Daraa countryside.

S Melanson

Beat Spain!!! Strange times is an understatement in this land of confusion. However, I think their is an explanation for the craziness that is fairly straight forward. I discuss this above in a post.

Richard M

What a stunner! Spain was one of the top 3 teams. Great saves by Akinfeev!

So ISIS like earlier in Idlib tries to use the SAA as a useful tool against FSA to expand their sphere of influence. Hope that Russian air force is prepared to such scenario.

Much of the Suweida area like Borsa al Sham is captured as Shbab al Sunnh lader of al Jabha aljinobia has accepted surrender and reconciliation. They are the first armed FSA group in Daraa. While thousands of FSA surrendered today SAA-Russians accepting rconciliation things don’t look good for the others.

BlueRiver

Daesh doesn’t stand a chance against the SAA.The Syrian army will soon recapture southern Syria. All your buddies are going to die,it is just a matter of time.In case you don’t know, Daesh is a shadow of its former self. The people responsible for its early success are dead and as for Abū Bakr al-Baghdadi,he too will be killed.

ابوعبدالله العراقي

Allah says, “Everyone shall taste death. And only on Yawmul Qiyaamah (the Day of Resurrection) shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he is indeed successful. The life of this world is only enjoyment of deception.” (Quran – 3:185).

Not so US backed any more, frankly this sort if conflict of interests is why unless there is some sort of direct US presence we shouldn’t call them US backed. How many are we talking about here?

Siegfried

Ah, give us a break with your propaganda-cosmetics

Mike

Why don’t you leave and save yourself the embarrassment, every group you have supported here are on the ropes or on the run. I know you are bottom feeding sub-human sewer rat, but have some micro sense of dignity and leave you sack off shit.

Bob

All the FSA ‘Southern Front’ factions in the occupied southern territory, and there are over fifty, are wage-payed and armed by either the US/Saudi Arabia/Qatar Israel. They have always fought alongside al-Qieda/al-Nusra/HTS – the latter have always been present alongside FSA on all strategic fronts in the southern territory. This basic reality is even acknowledged in the US MSM. You really need to try a lot harder, Elijah.

TheSecular

All moderate islamists should just Defect to ISIS. ISIS is the only group that might actually give the SAA a hard time. and as for the western states. This is Embarrassing.

Siegfried

At least the rats don’t have the cover of “moderates” anymore.. That makes it simple for the Russians to splash them without Big-Baboon-Yell from Israel, London or Washington.

Gregory Casey

Agreed!! And do it quickly with maximum affect …….. big bomb drops on ISIS to accelerate their meeting with Alla ….. a……. a …… shxt! It’s Lucifer boys!!

jako

Fuck you Daesh bitch !

TheSecular

Easy there tiger, I support the SAA not the terrorists. Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.

Siegfried

Israel told them to play “heroes”? Now come the Russkis and f*ck them with cluster-bombs :)

antoun

aie daesh!!

S Melanson

There has been a lot of confusion regarding US policy in Syria and foreign policy in general. I offer here an explanation for what I believe is driving the chaos. I will start with some examples of US actions/statements that illustrate what seems to be a schizophrenic policy approach on the world stage.

Consider Southern Syria and US statements. The US states there will be severe repercussions for Syria if they launch an offensive to liberate rebel (terrorist) held territory. The US then releases a statement that completely contradicts the prior threat and practically disowns their proxies in southern Syria % effectively, encouraging them to reconcile with Damascus.

Then consider rebel reactions. As expected, given their being abandoned by Washington, rebels clamour for reconciliation with Damascus. Then, rebels begin resisting reconciliation and even join ISIS. Why do that after the US threw them under a bus? Does not make much sense. Well US relations with Turkey have made little sense as well, same with Russia. It is like taking an extreme cold shower followed by an extreme hot shower – and repeat again and again.

We are going to leave Syria. No, we are going to stay a while, build new military base. Putin is a good guy. We shoot down a Russian fighter. Turkey is our ally. Let’s arm the Kurds. Let’s abandon the Kurds. No wait… we are working out a deal says Turkey, greeted by odd silence from the US – WTF! NATO is obsolete. NATO is critical to counter Russian aggression and we are sticking by our allies in Europe. Let’s start a trade war and invite Russia back into the the G8 as I rush off to meet little rocket man who is now my best freind.

I want world peace. Meet my new national security advisor, John Bolton.

What this looks, like is two different policy agendas in play that are at cross purposes to each other. Trump is not in full control, not even close. But then, neither is the opposing side, often referred to as the deep state. I prefer to put it more simply – Trump represents elites attempting to replace the elites that dominate power structures. The two sets of elites have different visions of what the future should look like and policies reflect that. Since both are not in full control but also wield power, both policy agendas are being played out on the world stage simultaneously.

This struggle among elites is not new, it goes back to at least the 1980s and over time the struggle has become increasingly tense. The intensity built till we had soft civil war and the rivalries were not only across agencies, but also within. Agencies such as the CIA split based on different views on where the CIA should head – many rejected the course that adopted torture as acceptable and more extreme measures against own citizens on larger scales that were basically to become out of control. This was at first under the surface, but no longer. The divisions are quite visible now.

The US is not heading into a new civil war. The US is in a state of civil war.

Where this is heading is very dangerous. But there is certainly hope as the people are waking up and can play a decisive role here. I have more to add and will do so later but invite comments.

Gregory Casey

I agree there is a degree of schizoid policy and thought in Washington but the reality is that there is chaos on the ground in places where US Personnel are deployed and on the ground. US Commanders in Eastern Syria have gone out of their way to protect ISIS and to enforce American Military presence on the ground. Meanwhile, the Americans are supposed to be in an alliance with the Kurdish dominated FSA whilst doing deals with the Turks in the North and North-East that are damaging to Kurdish concerns. Uncle Sam has no idea what it is doing in Syria and its actions on the ground reinforce this thinking. Unless Trump has a wish to welcome home 1,000+ body-bags at Andrews he’d better do a deal with Putin when he meets with him in 2 weeks time and formally announce an American withdrawal from Syria. The alternative is to pour more ‘assets’ into Eastern Syria, a course that may not find favor with the American public at this point, particularly with Congressional Elections looming over the horizon.

S Melanson

The chaos and conflicting actions of US military commanders, political leaders and senior rank and file of government agencies is a reflection of competing agendas. Each side knows what it is trying to accomplish but when one side puts policy into action, the other side counters. Because the conflicting sets of actions are both carried out in the name of the US, it gives the impression of chaotic policy. The US is a house divided.

I intend to post soon a discussion of events that took place in 2014 that illustrate my point and I have documentation and evidence which can be reviewed so that interested readers can draw their own conclusions.

Gregory Casey

I look forward to this!

We seem to be witnessing the rise of “resistance” inside the US. People are fed up with the monolithic MIC/CIA policy juggernaut. Soon the resistance will have a name, but necessarily it is having to act below MSM radar for the moment.

Tudor Miron

Give them some FAB-500s – they need to learn a little. Joyning daesh rats that are abanadoned but their founders (UK/US/Israel) is the shortest way to hell.

Empire's Frontiers

The thing is, with this news very little changed for the jihadis.

The admin had to do more work coloring the map than the jihadis did to integrate under their ‘new’ command.

PZIVJ

Looks like Tafas made their announcement to soon. Before SAA was in position to move in. There will be new map out tomorrow with less green area. :)

Terra Cotta Woolpuller

Citizens want it but Bibi is not prepared to hold them at the borders and my suspicion is the refugees are going to overrun the Golan Heights.

Empire's Frontiers

Unarmed people fleeing for their lives?

Just what the IDF’s been training for.

RichardD

The clearing of this border area is going as fast as the clearing of the interior pockets. That’s a good thing. What’s left of the Idlib pocket will probably clear just as quickly. At that stage the non state actor areas, with the exception of Isis in the SE will be clear. Which looks to be under US/SDF protection given the number of US attacks on Syrian government coalition forces there.

Then the war will enter a new phase of getting state actors out of US, Turkey, and Israel occuppied areas. Which will probably be a continuation of force and negotiation like the rest of Syria. With the exception that the force component may include a higher percentage of non conventional action in the occuppied areas involving local resistence, intel and special military operations.

And clearing the Golan may be in conjunction with getting the IDF, Mossad and Shin Bet out of the Palestinian territories. Which may include the eviction of Jews from these areas.
