On the night of February 20th, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched another devastating wave of strikes on Ukrainian rear infrastructure. The massive attack targeted Ukrainian gas production and processing facilities, energy infrastructure and military targets all around the country.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation officially confirmed the strikes. This was a combined attack with air-, sea- and land-based missiles, as well as kamikaze drones of various types. According to the Russian military, the goal of the attack has been achieved.
The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total 14 Russian missiles and 161 UAVs targeted Ukraine during the night. Ukrainian air defense allegedly shot down 80 Russian UAVs, 78 more drones were reportedly “locally lost” and missed their targets. The Ukrainian military did not report the interception of a single Russian missile, which confirms reports on the depletion of its air defense systems.
The Ukrainian side confirmed damage across the country. The Ukrainian military reported Russian strikes in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Odessa and Kiev regions. Ukrainian officials confirmed heavy damage to the gas infrastructure in the country, revealing no details about the exact facilities targeted by Russian strikes. According to the Energy Minister, gas production facilities were mainly affected.
Iskander strikes eliminated Ukrainian military equipment and personnel near the village of Baranovka in the Sumy region:
One of the targets of the night strikes was the Shebelinkagazdobycha gas station located in the village of Mirne in the Kharkiv region. This is one of the largest gas production stations in Ukraine, which produced, processed and supplied gas to the main pipelines in the eastern and central regions. The station was struck by Russian Kalibr and Kh-101/555 missiles. As a result of the attack, the compressor shop No. 1 was completely destroyed, compressors critical for pumping gas were put out of order, gas purification systems, automatic gas supply and control stations, were destroyed.
Russian Iskander and Kalibr missiles also struck another gas compressing station in the village of Glazunovka in the same Kharkiv region. It was providing the gas supply to the western Ukrainian regions, including the large gas depots located there. As a result of the gas leak, a large fire broke out and critically damaged the local equipment. Russian strikes destroyed the turbocharger unit and the power supply system.
Russian strikes were also recorded in the towns of Zolotonosha, Chuguev, Krasnograd in the Kharkiv region.
Together with strategic Ukrainian gas infrastructure, Ukraine suffered heavy damage as a result of the massive strikes of Russian drones in Odessa launched for the second night in a row. The local authorities confirmed interruption of energy supplies in the city. Large fires broke out in the city, including in the port. Local reports revealed that the BG-200 Balaklava marine guard boat, which patrolled coastal waters and escorted vessels, including with military cargo, was damaged.
The locals reported a series of large explosions in the capital Kiev and on its outskirts. More Russian strikes were recorded in Zaporozhie and Kherson, where Ukrainian military points were destroyed.
