Russia’s state-of-the-art frigate Admiral Grigorovich, armed with Caliber missiles, set off to the Mediterranean Sea from the port of Sevastopol on November 3.

The frigate will join the Russian naval task force off the coast of Syria, the Rusian state-trun “RIA Novosti” news agency reported, citing a source in the law enforcement agencies of the Crimean Republic.

“The vessel is all purpose. It can deliver missile strikes on both surface and ground targets at large distances. It will be also integrated into the joint air defense system of the Russian military grouping,” the source said.

The Admiral Grigorovich-class (Project 11356R/M) is the state-of-the-art class of frigates ordered by the Russian Navy for the Black Sea Fleet. The first of the class, the Admiral Grigorovich, was commissioned in 2016. In total, six frigates have been ordered.

Named after the Harry Potter character??

BMWA1

His ship fought off Jap torpedo boat attacks in Port Arthur at start of that unsuccessful war.

Ted

Is this not the class of ships that have no engines? I have read other stories that three sit now awaiting sale to India because engines can not be procured? Made in Ukraine ?

John Whitehot

so how is it going to join the med group? with sails?

Ted

That’s why I said class, its obvious this ship received its engines. I believe two ships did from what I read. However I ask here because I thought maybe someone on this site or forum might know a thing or two about Russian Navy? Then again it may be my fault for thinking this? Not to mention its rather obvious from the graphic it will use oar’s as there is no room for a sail with it’s tiny mast!

Diego Castellanos

Russia got engines for three ships before the crisis in Crimea.
