Sergey Lavrov also discussed with his Chinese counterpart the Russian special operation in Ukraine and the negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. The sides exchanged views and agreed on their positions on such multilateral issues as the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, the Korean Peninsula, cooperation in the BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the CICA.
«Russia and China will move toward a just and democratic world order. We have the best relations with China in the history of their existence; we are developing a special privileged partnership with India,» – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during talks with the Chinese foreign minister.
In turn, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claimed that since the beginning of this year, China-Russia relations have endured major changes of the international situation and maintained the right direction and steady development trend.
The both sides showed their strong willingness to develop their bilateral relations and a stronger confidence in advancing cooperation in various fields. China intends to continue its cooperation with Russia, guided by the consensus reached by the two heads of the states, in order to bring Sino-Russian relations to a higher level in a new era. The Russian side is ready to work with the Chinese side to further strengthen their strategic coordination at the highest level and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields. At the same time, in the international arena, the sides are claiming their intention to promote multipolarity, oppose hegemonism, and uphold the goals and principles of the UN Charter.
China did not support Western sanctions against Moscow. Harsh restrictive measures are unacceptable and harm countries that are not parties to the conflict, Wang Yi said earlier. In his view, such measures split the world and should not be used. Earlier, during his video conversation with European Union diplomatic chief Josep Borrel, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called the harsh sanctions of Western countries against Russia unacceptable. According to him, Beijing is ready, together with the parties concerned, to assist in the speedy settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
China favors a diplomatic solution to the situation in Ukraine, the country’s Foreign Ministry said.
“Since the conflict erupted, the Chinese side has always taken the initiative of reconciliation and negotiations,” – said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian.
In mid-March, The Wall Street Journal and CNN reported that Russia had requested military assistance from China. Moscow and Beijing officially denied this information. U.S. President Joe Biden said during his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping that China would face consequences if Beijing helps Moscow to conduct the military operations in Ukraine.
To summarize the two days of talks, they were mainly focused on the international agenda. The sides discussed current international problems and exchanged views on international issues. In the context of bilateral relations, the sides confirmed their commitment to further cooperation in various spheres. Unfortunately, no specific information on cooperation between the Russian and Chinese sides was provided. A more substantive document on this issue could be the Joint Statement of the Russian Federation and the PRC on International Relations in the New Era and Global Sustainable Development of February 4, 2022.
