Kata’ib Hezbollah, one of the most influential Iran-aligned armed factions in Iraq, said on March 16 that its spokesperson, known as Abu Ali al-Askari, had been killed
In a statement, Kata’ib Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Abu Hussein al-Hamidawi praised al-Askari’s role in communicating the group’s positions and messages “during periods of confrontation,” saying that he served as a link between fighters on the ground and the group’s media platforms.
He added that Abu Mujahid al-Assaf, the group’s security official, will assume responsibility for carrying the role of the group’s spokesman.
In addition to his rule as the spokesman for Kata’ib Hezbollah, al-Askari reportedly held a senior security position within the group.
Kata’ib Hezbollah didn’t provide any details on how or when al-Askari was killed, but it was reported that the spokesman was among four killed in a strike that hit a residential building in the Arasat district of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, just two days earlier.
Furthermore, it was alleged by Iraqi media that al-Askari was non-other-then Abu Ali al-Ameri, who was mourned as a senior commander of Kata’ib Hezbollah after the strike.
Kata’ib Hezbollah is a part of the government-recognized Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), and at the same time believed to be one of the factions of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), which has been launching strikes against military and economic facilities linked to the U.S. in Iraq and neighboring countries since the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran.
Earlier in the day, the PMF mourned eight fighters killed in “American-Israeli strikes” on two different positions located in the western province of al-Anbar, specifically close to the town of Qa’im on the border with Syria.
Video footage that surfaced around the same time showed an A-10 Thunderbolt II close support jet flying over Iraq, which suggests that the strikes were carried out by the U.S., not Israel.
The last 24 hours also saw an escalation in attacks attributed to the IRI on such facilities, with several blasts and interceptions reported in the province of Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, and in the diplomatic support center, formerly known as Camp Victory, close to Baghdad International Airport.
Iraq’s oil ministry also said a drone strike targeted Majnoon oil field in the southern province of Basra, which is operated by U.S. companies.
More attacks took place after the death of al-Askari was announced, with blasts reported in Baghdad’s highly-secured Green Zone, specifically within the U.S. embassy complex and in the Royal Tulip Al-Rasheed Hotel, the home of the European Union mission in the country.
While both the American-Israeli alliance and Iran-aligned factions have traded blows in Iraq since the start of the war on the Islamic Republic, they previously did so in a very carefully calculated manner. Now, however, both appear to be escalating. A full-on war could soon break out in the country.
