Suicide Drone Hit Kurdish-Held Town In Northern Syria

File image.

On February 27, a suicide drone targeted the town of Tell Rifaat in the northern Aleppo countryside, which is held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The drone hit the town’s main hill, where troops from the Syrian Arab Army are allegedly deployed. No casualties or material losses were reported. The army is present in Tell Rifaat and several other SDF-held towns and villages in the northern Aleppo countryside to deter the Turkish military and its proxies. Several units of the Russian Military Police are also deployed in the region for the same purpose.

The Hawar News Agency, which is linked to the SDF, said that the suicide drone was launched by the Turkish military, without elaborating.

The Turkish military operates several types of small suicide drones, or so-called loitering munitions, like the STM Kargu which was used in Syria before. The munition has a range of 5 kilometers and an endurance of 30 minutes.

Turkish-backed militants have been also experimenting with primitive suicide drones. One such drone crashed near the SDF-held town of Baylouniyah in the northern countryside of Aleppo a few weeks ago.

Turkish forces and the SDF have been exchanging attacks in northern and northeastern Syria for nearly a month now. The two sides may soon find themselves in a serious military confrontation.
