In the very early hours of July 6th, an explosive-laden “suicide” drone was shot out of the sky by US C-RAM from Union 3 base as it neared the US Embassy in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

This marked the 47th attack on American forces in Iraq so far in 2021, six of them involving drones, according to AFP.

Photographs were released of the down drone, as well.

Strings of glowing tracer rounds could also be seen in the videos, over the loud rumble of exploding munitions from the American C-RAM defense systems, which appeared to fire off several volleys.

The reported drone attack came just hours after at least three rockets slammed into the Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq’s Anbar Province earlier on July 5th.

Colonel Wayne Marotto, spokesman for the US-led military coalition, noted that the strikes caused no deaths or injuries, adding that damage to the base was still being assessed.

In April, a drone packed with explosives hit the coalition’s Iraq headquarters in the military part of the airport in Erbil, the Iraqi Kurdish regional capital.

The next month, a drone packed with explosives hit the Ain Al-Asad airbase housing US troops.

On June 9, three explosives-laden drones targeted Baghdad airport, where US soldiers are also deployed. One was intercepted by the Iraqi army.

In a sign that the United States is concerned about new drone attacks, it recently offered up to $3 million for information on attacks targeting its interests in Iraq.

Neither the rocket attack, nor the drone attack were claimed by any group, but the US blames the Iranian-backed factions that comprise Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and it targeted PMU positions on June 27th, killing four fighters.

President Joe Biden ordered a series of strikes on facilities used by two Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, Kata’ib Hezbollah and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, claiming the move was meant as a “deterrent” against future attacks. Baghdad, however, condemned the operation as a “blatant and unacceptable violation” of its national sovereignty, a common complaint throughout the 18-year US occupation.

It also evidently is not working as deterrence.
