Early on April 6, seven militants of the Turkish-backed al-Shamiya Front were killed and several others were wounded when unidentified gunmen attack their checkpoint near the town of Sgoe in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.
Sgoe, also known as al-Salameh, is located to the north of the town of Azaz, less than two kilometers away from the border line with Turkey.
The unidentified gunmen took al-Shamiya militants by surprise. The attack lasted for a few minutes only. All the attackers were able to flee.
One of the militants killed in the attack was identified as Mohammad Hamdo Barbori, a field commander of the al-Shamiya Front.

While some Syrian opposition activists blamed the attack on ISIS or Kurdish forces, others said that the attack was carried out by other Turkish-backed militants as a result of disagreements over criminal activities. Sgoe is known to be a hub for drug and human traffickers.
It’s also worth noting that al-Shamiya Front was recently involved in a conflict with another Turkish-backed faction, the Ahrar al-Sham Movement. The two factions fought over the town of al-Awlan in the northern Aleppo countryside on April 1. Three militants were killed in the clashes.
The deadly attack in Sgoe highlights the deteriorating security situation in Turkish-occupied areas in northern and northeastern Syria. Ankara has been doing nothing to keep its proxies in line.
