A Syrian suspected of carrying out a bombing near Damascus last month died after he threw himself from a building during a raid in Beirut, Reuters reported on August 18, citing Lebanese media and a security source.
The source told the news agency that the 23-year-old suspect entered Lebanon illegally and settled with his relatives in al-Salam, a southern suburb of Beirut.
“Members of the Hezbollah group raided the site, and when he learned that his whereabouts had been discovered, he threw himself from the seventh floor and was taken to St. George Hospital, where he died,” the source said, adding that two of the suspect’s relatives were killed.
The suspect was reportedly involved in a bombing that took place outside the Sayeda Zeinab shrine town south of Damascus on July 27. Six people were killed in the bombing and several others were wounded. ISIS claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack as well as for another bombing that targeted a bus in the Shiite town a few days earlier and wounded two people.
Hezbollah maintains a fairly large presence in Sayeda Zeinab and is thought to be responsible for much of the security of the shrine which is visited by thousands of Shiite pilgrims from Lebanon, Iraq and Iran each year.
The town of Sayeda Zeinab faced many threats since the outbreak of the war in Syria. In the early years of the war, Syrian rebels attempted to occupy the town. Later on, the shrine and the town were targeted by several terrorist attacks, most of which were orchestrated by ISIS.
