Late on October 27, gunmen suspected of being ISIS members attacked a center of the Syrian Military Intelligence Directorate in the town of al-Bukamal in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
The gunmen targeted the center with assault rifles and several hand grenades before fleeing al-Bukamal on two motorcycles. An intelligence officer was killed as a result of the bold hit-and-run attack, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
Following the attack, security forces deployed reinforcements in al-Bukamal and banned the movements of motorcycles within the town.
The next day, the Syrian Arab Army and its allies amassed a large force in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside to launch a combing operation in the outskirts of al-Bukamal. The main aim is to push ISIS cells away from the town, which is located right on the border with Iraq.
ISIS cells have been fairly active near al-Bukamal. Earlier this month, the SOHR reported a large attack by the terrorists on military positions near the town. Nine soldiers and three civilians were allegedly killed. ISIS official news agency, Amaq, is yet to confirm this.
The terrorist group’s presence along the Syrian-Iraqi border will not likely come to an end any time soon. The group’s cells were operating along the border line even before the outbreak of the war in Syria in 2011.
