A series of suspected Israeli strikes hit the town of Jdeidat al-Shaibani some 15 kilometers to the northwest of the Syrian capital, Damascus, early on March 24, according to Syrian media.
Photos showing the aftermath of the strikes were posted to social media. Opposition news sources alleged that the strikes targeted ammunition depots of the Syrian military, which were also in use by Lebanon’s Hezbollah. There were no reports of casualties.
The strikes were not reported by the official Syrian Arab News Agency. There was also no statement on the attack from the Israeli site.
If confirmed, this would be the third Israeli attack to target military sites in the outskirts of the Syrian capital within a single week. The previous two attacks, which took place on March 17 and 19, targeted Syrian military sites linked to Hezbollah in the al-Qalamoun mountain chain near Damascus.
Israel has significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip last October, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hezbollah and other affiliated armed factions.
Despite a recent increase in rocket attacks targeting the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, war-torn Syria is yet to officially respond to Israel’s repeated attacks, likely to avoid a dangerous confrontation.
