On September 17, several large blasts rocked a base of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) near the town of Jbab in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.
Some Syrian activists said that the base, which hosts the 89th Regiments, was hit by several Israeli strikes. However, others alleged that the blasts that rocked the base were the result of a controlled detention of war ruminants. There were no reports of casualties.
The Syrian Arab News Agency has not yet released any statement clarifying the causes of the blasts. The state-run agency usually reports any Israeli attack on Syrian territory within minutes.
Two waves of Israeli strikes hit Syria earlier this week, specifically on September 13. The first wave targeted air defense bases in the western coastal governorate of Tartus, killing two service members and wounding several others. The second wave hit a military research center in the west-central governorate of Hama. Only material losses were reported there.
Israel launched hundreds of strikes against Syria over the past decade as a part of a covert military campaign known as “the war between the wars”. However, Israeli officials rarely acknowledge responsibility for the strikes.
The main aim of the Israeli campaign is to prevent Iran from establishing a lasting military presence in Syria and smuggling advanced weapons to Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.
Israel has been especially concerned with the presence of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah in Daraa and the neighboring governorate of al-Qaunitra. Many of Israel’s recent strikes targeted military installations in the two governorates.
