Suspected US Drone Strike Targeted Iraq’ Wasit Governorate

On September 9, local sources reported a suspected US drone strike in the Wasit Governorate of Iraq. Following the attack, a column of smoke was seen near the headquarters of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in al-Suwaira area north of Wasit Governorate.

However, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior denied the airstrikes.

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced, “Some social media channels published news about an airstrike between al-Suwira and al-Azizia areas. While we deny these reports, but as preliminary information about this incident, we emphasize that the incident was a fire in some grass in the area, which led to the burning of some of the ammunition in that area.”

While the Iraqi Ministry of Interior has denied this attack, local sources observed an American MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone over the area moments before the alleged fire. This increases the possibility of an airstrike.

Nonetheless, this is not the first time that Iraqi officials’ claims are false. In the past, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior had denied some American airstrikes against the PMU headquarters, but later it became clear that the airstrikes had taken place and the PMU members were killed.

It is worth mentioning that on July 30, the US army carried out a strike in the central province of Babil. Later, the PMF announced in a statement that four of its members were killed in the blast and several others were wounded. The US claimed that this attack targeted fighters who were preparing to launch a suicide drone attack that posed a threat to U.S. forces and its allies.

The Iraqi groups began launching attacks against U.S. bases in Iraq and neighboring Syria as well as against targets in Israel last October in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip and Washington’s unwavering support for it.

Israel has not openly responded to the Iraqi groups attacks yet. Nevertheless, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, after the start of the war in Gaza.

Some believe that since Israel refrains from making public and noisy attacks on Iraq like what is happening in Syria; the US army targets Iraqi groups on behalf of Israel.

i don’t think the iraqis are going to put up with the us screwing up their country more. they have been less violent than they could have been, but i don’t think that will continue. if you have family stationed in iraq, you should get them out.
