The Ministry of Health of Syria announced on March 22 that it had registered the very first case of the notorious coronavirus in the war-torn country.
Health Minister Dr. Nizar Yazaji told the Syrian state-run TV that a 20-year old girl who returned from aboard has tested positive for COVID-19. The girl reportedly came from Lebanon.
The case was apparently detected right away. The girl, which is not showing any symptoms yet, has been placed under quarantine.
On March 22 morning, Syria entered a general lock down. The move was succeeded by several strict measures aiming at preventing a possible widespread of COVID-19 in the country. Schools, markets, government departments were shut down. public transportation are set to be suspended on March 23, when border with Lebanon will be also closed.
In the last two weeks, the Ministry of Health of Syria prepared many quarantine centers and medical points in different parts of the country.
Syria had called on the international community to pressure the U.S. and the EU into lifting their sanctions, which dealt a devastating blow to its economy over the last nine years. Damascus also held the U.S. and the EU responsible for the widespread of the virus in sanctioned countries, including Iran and Venezuela.
While Syria is making efforts to confront the threat of coronavirus, the country’s limited resources remain a real threat. A widespread of the virus in the Syria could lead to a tragedy far worse than everything we have seen, so far.
