Syria has officially rejected the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) fact-finding mission (FFM) report on the alleged chemical attack in Syria’s Douma last April, saying that the report is filled with “flagrant distortion of facts.”
“What attracts attention now is that the authors of the [OPCW] report ignored the statements of witnesses who lived with that incident and described the allegations of using chemical weapons in Douma as a play performed by armed terrorist organizations,” a spokesman for the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on March 7.
The OPCW’s report, which was released on March 1, concluded that chlorine was likely used in a chemical attack in Douma. Despite making this serious claim, the organization admitted that its FFM found no traces of any designated chemical weapon agent. Furthermore, the mission was not able to verify several evidences provided by the Syrian opposition.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman accused US, France and the UK of fabricating the allegations regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria with the help from the so-called White Helmets organization.
“Later, they obstructed efforts to conduct investigations by the mission in Douma through launching a direct military aggression on Syria on April 14th, 2018 that destroyed scientific centers which include laboratories for peaceful purposes,” the spokesman added.
In the end of the statement, the spokesman called on the OPCW and its technicians to uncover any fake report and to appoint FFM members who are professional, fair and neutral.
The OPCW’s report was previously criticized by the Russian Foreign Ministry, who accused the organization of ignoring information provided by the Russian and Syrian parties confirming that Duoma’s attack had been staged by the White Helmets.
In the report the OPCW stated the some of chlorine samples found the could also be of cleaning agents with chlorine or chlorine by products in them
