De-escalation zones agreed to be formed in four conflict zones across Syria at the Astana peace talks yesterday will be closed for US-led coalition warplanes, Russia’s special envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev said, according to the Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti.

I suspect more like ISIS was seen as a useful tool against the Assad regime, just like the Allies saw Hitler as a useful tool against the USSR prior to WWII. And even then they only attacked where it conflicted with the interests of the US. As in the Kurdish parts of Syria and in Iraq. Let me guess, but the Israeli airplanes will still be permitted to fly and bomb whatever part of Syria they want to… So nothing has been solved thus far. Israel has inflicted far more damage on Syria the past 80 years then the USSA ever has.
I find this very interesting as it is such a shift from the previous Russian/Syrian position of being against safe zones, but further because all sides on this conflict including Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the US have signed on to the concept. A way may have finally been found to separate the “moderates” from Al-Nusra. It’s a six month proposal with a way to extend it for another six months.
If it calms down the fighting in western Syria, is also seems that the shift now is for everyone, including the US and allies to focus on defeating ISIS in eastern Syria. The Russians and Syrians have signaled that they are going to move to liberate Deir Ezzor. Should be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

You do not hear Assad or the Syrians bitching. They do, however inform the Syrians of any military events that they become aware of. Then again, who really believes that it was strictly Syrian defenses that took out 36 cruise missiles and ‘confused’ the other 23?
