Syria’s military said on March 30 that a large-scale drone attack targeted its bases near the border with Iraq, vowing to respond.
In a statement, the military reported “a large-scale attack by a number of drones targeting several army bases near the Iraqi border at dawn today,” saying that most of the drones were intercepted.
“We are studying our options and will respond appropriately to neutralize any threat and prevent any aggression against Syrian territory,” it added in a statement carried by the state-run SANA news agency.
Following the attack, the military deployed large reinforcements, including rocket launchers and drone units, along the border with Iraq, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The London-based monitoring group noted that many of the troops sent there are foreign jihadists, and said that a Tribal mobilization was ongoing.
Assistant defense minister for eastern Syria, Sipan Hamo, said a day earlier that four drones from Iraq attacked a United States base near the town of Qasrak in the governorate of al-Hasakah, but were intercepted.
“We hold Iraq responsible and call upon it to prevent the recurrence of attacks that threaten our stability,” Hamo said in a post to X.
The day before, Syria’s army said it repelled another drone attack from Iraq targeting al-Tanf in the governorate of Rif Dimashq, a base which used to house U.S. forces.
Another base in eastern Syria was targeted with rockets last week. An Iraqi official said an Iraqi faction was behind the attack, and four people were arrested in connection with it.
Syria has not outright supported the American-Israeli war on Iran, which began more than a month ago, but it has repeatedly condemned retaliatory strikes by the Islamic Republic targeting facilities hosting or supporting the U.S. military in Arab countries.
Multiple reports speculated that Sharaa will attack Iran allies in Lebanon or Iraq. Despite official denial by Syria, this led to some serious tensions.
Just last week, Iran threatened to target the People’s Palace in the Syrian capital, Damascus, as well as two luxury hotels located nearby, claiming that American, British and even Israeli experts were present there. Syria refrained from responding to the threat.
Iran-aligned armed factions in Iraq are widely believed to be behind all recent attacks on military bases in Syria. Any action by the country against these factions could, however, trigger a fierce response. The Islamic Republic could easily take down the country’s war-torn infrastructure, ending any prospect of recovery.

the alawites, by their betrayal and escape to russia, made the destruction of iran possible. as payment for their drones that turned the course of the war in ukraine into a russian win, the iranians should demand that russia kill all the alawites who fled to russia. the russians should not have these traitors to moscow, but rather throw them into the sea on the way. we should simply open the plane doors and kick each one into the sea.
iran will be destroyed because the alawites are cowardly traitors and the russians helped them escape. the russians should throw every traitor who fled to russia in the style of augusto pinochet’s servants into the sea, never to be found again. what these traitors have done to iran can only be paid with death and no other punishment is appropriate.
any traitor who has fled to a russian base is a damned criminal traitor and coward, and russian soldiers, if they are soldiers, should kick any such person out of the plane and into the sea while en route to russia. this also applies to their wives and children. the russians made a fundamental mistake in taking these damned traitorous criminals to their russia. china at least knows how to take revenge on traitors, and traitors will pay dearly for their betrayal the panama canal.
