Late on August 15, the Syrian Arab Air Defense Forces (SyAADF) intercepted a missile of an unspecified type over the town of Masyaf in the western Hama countryside.
Citing an unnamed military source, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the mysterious missile came from northern Lebanon.
“At 23:06 of Thursday night, 15-8-2019, our air defense media uncovered a hostile target coming from northern Lebanon towards the town of Masyaf, and immediately dealt with it destroying it before it could reach its target,” the military source said.
A Russian base is located in the area, over which the missile was intercepted. An S-400 air-defense system is known to be deployed in the base. Moreover, a Syrian S-300 air-defense system is deployed in a nearby base.
Pro-government sources said the missile was launched by an Israeli warplane. This remains the most logical scenario. However, it is yet to be confirmed.
The Israeli Air Force (IAF) is known for its extensive use of aerial decoys. Israel’s IMI Systems developed several decoy missiles over the years, such as the ADM-141A\B TALD and the ADM-141C ITALD, which are equipped with passive and active radar enhancers. TALD has a range of 126km, while the ITALD’s range is over 300km.

Israel may have launched a decoy missile to provoke the SyAADF in order to collect information and prepare for future airstrikes on targets in the region.
what kind of “information” can israel collect by launching a decoy? if its destroyed isnt the info destroyed too?
The decoy missile used to see the location of the air defence radars. As the radars are activated so the Israel see the locations of the radars which are then easy to destroy by inactive radar homing missiles.
Not needed decoys just the aircraft detect the radar waves and its locations….Israel launched a missile or guide bomb….loud explosion over the sky was heard in Homs and Tartus..

Yes definitely Syria should immediately dislocate their SAMS because Syrian forces have activated their radars then they have hit the coming missiles. Israel have already taken 3D picture of each SAM system.

They pickup the Syrian radar signals that are given off by their own radar and electronics surveillance systems, they like to know reaction times, effective detection ranges, types of frequencies used, all sorts of info can be gained, the decoy’s just used to make them activate their radars, it’s just a bullet nothing more.

Decoy missiles are like subsonic mach 0.8 speed UAV drones with radars to detect and measure the up coming radiations from radars for GPS which will be fed to GPS in missiles to be used next time. These decoy missiles are data linked with Israeli fighter jets as well as with the military air base. Nowadays these systems are much cheaper and easily available from China.

They can’t change the frequencies the radars use, they’re set, though a few do use dual or multi band frequencies. The Israelis do this to see what mobile radars are located where, and what type they are, and what sort of range they have, that way the Israelis can plot courses to avoid them, that’s why they’re usually switched off and only activate when the main fixed radar systems tell them to, they hide that information from the Israelis and the Israelis don’t know where they are.

May be you know or not Lebanon is a free country. That is a main hub of Israel. If Syria bring these radars close to Lebanon border then that can be easily targeted by anti radiation missiles without using any decoy missiles. Syrian have studied all options then they have chosen that locations for radars.
They don’t need to put the radars closer but the SAM’s and MANPADS are better when closer to their targets. The Russians and possibly the Syrians too can also detect the Israeli radars systems when they’re active, perhaps the Syrians should also launch a few decoys Israelis way and see where their hidden radars are too, just for the fun of it, better still follow up with a missile strike on the revealed radar units.

The decoy is sent in to make the Syrian and Russian radar systems activate, then the Israeli radar and electronic surveillance systems which are either on the ground in Israel or sometimes located in reconnaissance aircraft nearby, can detect the signals given off by the Russian and Syrian radars. Most targeting radars are switched off until they’re needed, the decoy gives them a reason to activate.

If the Syrians activated any of their hidden radar units during the latest incident, they would have moved them immediately after they were no longer needed to new hidden locations. But the Israelis have a multitude of spies that give them even more info than their electronic surveillance devices do, Assad should set about eliminating that huge advantage the Israelis have to help even the playing field.

Good advice Rob. Does this small decoy have a data link, or just used to light up the radars so others can see their position? “passive and active radar enhancers” must mean it can look like another type of weapon or aircraft to a radar as far as size.
Definitely these missiles would have data link to make 3D picture with accurate coordinations displayed on the top of each radar.

This is not enough. Through these decoy missiles Israel have collected the Syrians Radars location GPS data. Which will be fed to missiles to hit the target precisely. Due to this mistake Iraq have lost war. That look we have destroyed the Israeli missiles but then next time Israel have precisely hit their all radars.
Israel failed to attack some target surely a warehouse or ammo depot…they would use an aerial guide bomb GBU 39 or Spice 2000..because have wasted many expensive AGM 142 and Delilah for nothing!… so Decoy is useless because we are not in 1980 and all of air defense system are mobile althougt some times unprofessional movements of SAA like when 2 pantsir where destroyed enable israeli airstrikes!

But why target a Russian base or anything at all anywhere near it, that’d be a mistake I couldn’t imagine the Israelis making, not after what happened the last time Russian personnel were killed, something fishy here.

They have a passive mode that doesn’t reveal their locations to the enemy, but when they’re fully activated they light up like beacons. Switched on and off in seconds or minutes from passive mode I think. Large stationary radars at the Syrian airports act as early warning radars, if there’s a need they tell specific radars in the affected areas to switch on and target the enemy. A central command centre controls all of the Syrian radar systems, hidden and visible, and the Russians have a command link to the Syrians system. The trick with mobile radars is to keep them hidden from the enemy and only activate them when they’re needed, not just to keep them safe from enemy missiles, it’s to keep the enemy in the dark about your defensive capabilities and weak spots.

Or trying to discover hidden radar locations, that way the Israelis can plot a course through them with the real payloads. Most hidden radar systems remain switched off until needed, that way their locations remain unknown to the enemy. The S-400’s have other early warning radars to let them know when they’re needed, when notified they go fully online and search for targets, which then means they’re detectable, so the ideal tactic is to keep them in passive mode until they’re really needed. The air radars at the major Syrian airports are very sophisticated and accurate, as well as having reasonable long range, they act as early warning radars for all the hidden radar systems in Syria, and they link to command centres that relay that data to all radar systems both hidden and operating, and activate the appropriate hidden radars when and where they’re needed.
