The Big Problem with the S-300 Favorite which Syria secured from Russia at the beginning of October is not so much where it is located but it’s size. Syria has a battalion strength S-300, whereas they really need 2 Regiment size systems, which would have 24 TELs and the capacity to guard multiple sites simultaneously. 4 TELs is one sixth of Syria’s needs and offers only limited capability. We are also only nearing the point of Syrian Air Defence training on the 4 TELs that they have. Hopefully Russia will in the New Year increase the strength of the SyAD to at least Regiment capacity. Now that would be a real game changer…

Iranian engineers repaired some to Sayyed 2 standard in 2016 and that is the unit that brought down the Zionist F-16I a few months ago. The Russians have also given Syria a few Pantsir medium range units, but so far SAA has not proven so proficient in using them or making hardened silos for them and the Zionists took out a Pantsir battery as the SAA soldiers left the unit in the open and were smoking outside. Arming Hezbollah with air defence is a far better bet.

Firstly, there is little info on Syrian Mig-29s, but it appears that they are training in Russia and basically get the same capabilities as Russian pilots of the same types.
Secondly, it would not make much sense, as even on CAP they would probably need to enter Lebanon to intercept the Israelis, and also risk being shot down by escorting fighters (the Israelis surely monitor the airspace during these missions).

Russia had hundreds of S200s in stock. The weapons in itself only need to pass a brief diagnostic test to be deemed operational.
Russia has restored the Syrian air defences long before the S300 transfer – it was important as much of its operational capability was destroyed in the very first days of the “revolution”, when units of extraordinarily well trained “moderate rebels” disabled large part of it in a series of surprise attacks (a chapter in the history of this war, that I hope will be studied in detail and published some day).
S-200 is a good system but cannot compete against active jamming from 4+ gen aircraft. ECM/EW completely disables it. S-300 on the other hand, can overcome ECM. That’s what’s needed here but SAA have NO operational S-300 in Damascus area.

This means EW and ECM pods do wonders for saving planes from old missiles. Fortunately, the updated S-300’s once operational, coupled with maybe even Krasutakh-4, will bolster Damascus a lot more. That’s what’s needed here. But in regards to older S-200, only way to make it updated and resistant to ECM is by making a brand new radar for it or heavily updating its existent tracking/early warning radars, either that or new S-300 lol.
it’s just that S200 have to operate at the limits of their engagement ranges – when the missiles get near the targets they have already exhausted their fuel and aren’t able to keep tracking if the target is maneuvering.
S300s may solve the problem as they can be launched without the receiving aircraft even knowing that there was a missile directed against it, until a couple seconds before impact.

In regards to Israeli strikes, they will keep doing them. It costs them little to launch from Lebanese airspace, and even if all the missiles are shot down, they can always tell their public that the “S300 hasn’t stopped the raids from happening”, which is probably the reason they have made this one – together with sending the message that “the US may be withdrawing, but Israel will persecute regime changing agenda”.
Perhaps it’s time somebody at the UN brings up the issue of Israel not only invading Lebanese airspace at leisure, but also employing lethal weapons from within it.
