Syrian air defense engaged over the night of September 24 and 25 several aerial targets over the waters off the port of Tartus, where a Russian naval base is located, Syrian media reported.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based pro-opposition monitoring group, said that at least 13 targets were shot down. No casualties or material damage was reported by the monitoring group or any other Syrian media source.
Other interceptions were reported over the coastal city of Jableh, some 47 kilometers to the north of Tartus. The Russian Khmeimim Air Base is located right next to the city.
The Russian naval base in Tartus and Khmeimim Air Base were attacked in the past with drones launched by Syrian militants from the northwestern region of Greater Idlib. However, Syrian media reports suggest that the latest failed attack was launched by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and targeted sites of the Syrian military.
The aerial attack on Tartus came just a day after the IDF expanded its aerial campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon, a close ally of Syria.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense has not yet released any statement clarifying what exactly happened in Tartus and Jableh overnight. There was also no comment from the IDF, which does not usually claim responsibility for its attack against Syria.
It’s worth noting that Israel has significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hezbollah and other factions of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
On September 8, an unprecedented Israeli attack targeted a military research center close to the town of Masyaf in the country’s western region. The attack, which allegedly included a commando helicopter raid, claimed the lives of 18 people, mostly of whom were civilians. During the attack, interceptions were also reported over Tartus.
