Military situation in North-Western Syria on September, 2

On September 2, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) artillery hammered militants’ positions in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib.

The artillery strikes targeted the towns of Kafar Aweed, Baluon, Sufuhon and Fatterah in Idlib’s southern countryside as well as the towns of al-Saraf and Kalz in the northern countryside of Lattakia.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) responded to the SAA’s artillery strikes by shelling its military positions in the Shashabo Mount in southern Idlib.

The SAA’s artillery strikes were likely a response to the repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement, that was signed by Russia and Turkey on March 5.

Greater Idlib militants, led by HTS, are violating the ceasefire agreement on a daily basis. Turkish forces in the region are turning a blind eye to these violations as well as to the militants’ military buildup in the region.

The ceasefire in Greater Idlib appears to be on the brink of collapse. Recent reports revealed that both the SAA and the militants were preparing to resume ground attacks.
