Syrian Army Artillery Shelled Militant Positions In Southern Idlib

On July 8, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) artillery pounded militants’ positions in the southern part of the Greater Idlib region.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the shelling targeted the towns of Benin, Deir Sunbul, Fatterah, Kansafra, Sufuhon, Fleifel, Mawzarah‏ and the western outskirts of al-Ruwaihah.

“So far, there is no information about any human losses [as a result of the shelling],” the monitoring group said in its report.

The artillery strikes were most likely a response to the militants’ repeated provocations. In the morning, a Syrian service member was reportedly shot dead by a sniper near the town of al-Ruwaihah. Such small-scale attacks have became quite common.

Russia and Turkey reached a ceasefire agreement in Greater Idlib on March 5. However, militants in the region do not comply with the agreement. Ankara doesn’t put any pressure on the militants to change their hostile behavior. This could soon lead to a serious escalation.
