On July 25, three militants were killed and seven others were injured when the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) targeted their positions in the Zawiya Mount in southern Idlib.
In the last 24 hours, the army shelled militants’ positions in a number of towns in the Zwaiya Mount, including Deir Sunbul, al-Ruwaihah, Benin, Fleifel, Kafar Aweed and San. Rocket launchers and heavy howitzers were used.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the milled and injured militants are from al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL).
“There is confirmed information about the presence of [militants] stranded under the rubble as a result of the collapse of one of the [targeted] headquarters,” the SOHR’s report reads.
Recent reports by pro-government sources revealed that the SAA is preparing to launch a new ground operation in Greater Idlib. The target could be the Zawiya Mount.
Greater Idlib factions, including HTS and the NFL, placed their militants in southern Idlib on a high alert. Reinforcements were also deployed in the region on July 24, according to opposition sources.
Any new operation in Greater Idlib will likely lead to a serious confrontation between the SAA and the Turkish military. Ankara has deployed thousands of troops in the region since the signing of the March 5 agreement with Russia.
