The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) imposed control of the town of al-Huwayz in the northwestern Hama countryside on May 15 following more than 48 hours of heavy clashes with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies.
A day earlier, the SAA entered al-Huwayz. However, a counter-attack by HTS forced the army to withdraw to the town’s outskirt. The counter-attack didn’t stop the army, that successfully secured the town in the morning of May 15.
Pro-government sources said that the SAA had eliminated an entire unit of HTS and Horas al-Din during the clashes around the town. Some of the unit’s members reportedly were foreigners.
The SAA is now advancing towards the towns of al-Huwayjah and Shahranaz north and northeast of al-Huwayz. The army will likely secure these towns in the upcoming few days.
