Syrian Army Destroys Remotely-Controlled Rocket Launcher, Downs Drones On Idlib Front (Photos)

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) repelled a large attack that was launched by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib late on September 2.

The attack targeted the 46th Regiment Base and several nearby positions of the SAA in the western countryside of Aleppo.

In a statement released on September 3, the Syrian Ministry of Defense said that the SAA repelled the attack after inflicting heavy human and material losses on HTS and its allies. During the clashes, the army destroyed a remotely-controlled rocket launcher.

Moreover, the army shot down two suicide drones which attempted to target its positions in the western Aleppo countryside.

Syrian opposition sources reported another smaller attack by the Turkistan Islamic Party, one of HTS allies, against SAA positions near the town of Khirbat al-Naqus in the northwestern Hama countryside. However, the Syrian MoD didn’t comment on these reports.

HTS and its allies stepped up their attacks in recent weeks, challenging the ceasefire in Greater Idlib that was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago.

On August 26, a tunnel bombing targeted a position of the SAA near the town of Milaja in the southern Idlib countryside. Some 11 soldiers were killed in the attack and a subsequent raid. Later on September 1, at least 16 soldiers were killed in a raid that targeted an army position near al-Sarraf town in the northern Lattakia countryside.

The SAA and the Russian Aerospace Forces have already launched a series of strikes against HTS and its allies in Greater Idlib in response to recent attacks. Details on the strikes and their results will likely be revealed soon.
