Syrian Army Finds US-Supplied Weapons In ISIS Hideouts In Al-Safa (Video)

On November 27, the Russian media outlet, Rusvesna, released a video showing soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) uncovering several weapons caches, which had been left behind by ISIS cells, during a security operation in the newly-liberated area of al-Safa.

The weapons caches contained a US-made TOW anti-tank guided missile (ATGM), three Bulgarian-made Fagot ATGMs, two Soviet-made RPG-22 anti-tank rockets and a Yugoslav-made M79 Osa anti-tank weapon along with five rounds.

This was not the first time US-supplied weapons were found with ISIS cells in al-Safa. Earlier this month, photos extracted from the mobile phone of a captured ISIS fighters showed that the terrorist group was using US-made assault rifles and a Chinese-made Man-portable air-defense (MANPAD) system, FN-6, which had been reportedly supplied wtih help from the U.S. and Qatar to several Free Syrian Army (FSA) groups in Syria.

All of these weapons, including the RPG-22s, were supplied with help from the U.S. to different FSA groups in Syria under a “train and equip” program which was authorized by former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2014. The program was halted by President Donald Trump in 2017. However, by then most US-supplied weapons had already found its way to terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq such as ISIS and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
