Wednesday, January 27, a senior officer from the Syrian Arab Army’s 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard reported to a media that the Syrian Armed Forces have constructed several tunnels in the rebel strongholds of Douma, Jobar, Harasta, ‘Ayn Al-Tarma, Zamalka, and Qaboun.

The military source also said that these locations were specifically chosen due to their enclosed buildings that make it hard to travel through without being detected by the terrorist snipers who patiently wait to kill the soldier.

However, alleged Russian and Iranian military advisers changed the Syrian Arab Army’s military tactics drastically in rural Damascus.

In past, it was reported several times in media that Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Islam (Army of Islam) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) use tunnel warfare to their advantage in the East Ghouta region of rural Damascus. They used those tunnels to dodge the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses and the Syrian Arab Air Force’s (SAAF) powerful airstrikes. Those tunnel invasions in the East Ghouta had been very effective for the militants since they could hide themselves from the Syrian Armed Forces while doing military movements.

After the success in the southern front of the East Ghouta, the Syrian Arab Army’s Republican Guard forces now turn their attention to the abandoned cities outside of the Syrian capital of Damascus which, according to a report, has been relatively impenetrable over the years because of the large presence of terrorists.

Coordinating with the Russian Aerospace Force the Syrian Arab Army have made significant gains in last few months in and around southern Syria, Latakia province, Deir Ezzor which is a Syrian government held enclave surrounded by ISIS and advancement towards eastern Homs province and Damascus province.
