AlMasdarNews reports: It should be no secret by now that the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) Special Forces and Hezbollah have been heavily concentrated in the East Ghouta region of rural Damascus; however, the purpose behind their deployment was relatively unknown until the recent death of Mustafa Badreddine (Hezbollah commander).
The Hezbollah commander was overseeing the military operation taking place near the Damascus International Airport before a round of artillery shells struck his positions in the East Ghouta.
Badreddine’s presence there was no coincidence because the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Hezbollah are preparing to secure the Damascus International Airport and Sayyida Zaynab District by capturing the strategic town of Deir Al-‘Assafir in the East Ghouta.
Deir Al-‘Assafir has long been a stronghold for the extremist rebels in the East Ghouta; its proximity to the Damascus International Airport makes it incredibly important to the Syrian government forces.
Should Deir Al-‘Assafir fall to the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah, then the extremist rebels will be completely surrounded at the imperative village of Zibdeen.
More importantly, the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah will have effectively split the East Ghouta into two separate pockets, leaving the extremist rebels with trapped in the south.
The battle for Deir Al-‘Assafir is expected to begin in the coming days as the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah make their final preparations before storming this town.
