On October 15, the Syrian military, intelligence and several groups of local fighters continued their security operation against ISIS cells in the town of Jasim.
The operation was launched a day earlier with the aim of ending ISIS presence in the town, which is located in the western countryside of Daraa.
An intelligence official told the Syrian Arab News Agency that the clashes are now taking place in the northern district of Jasim, where ISIS terrorists maintain a network of positions. According to the unnamed official, one of the position was destroyed which resulted in the death of several terrorists including an Iraqi commander.
Local fighters from Jasim and other parts of Daraa, including personnel from the 8th Brigade, are taking part in the security operation. The 8th Brigade is a Russian-backed unit of the military’s 5th Corps that was especially established for former rebels in the governorate.
“The security operation is witnessing a wide participation from the people of Daraa governorate who came from its eastern and western countryside … Three members of the local groups facing the organization [ISIS] were martyred, two of them from the city of Jasim and the third from the city of Tafas, while seven of the organization’s terrorists have been eliminated since the start of the operation,” the intelligence official told the stat-run news agency.
The official added that a curfew was imposed inside Jasim right after the start of the operation in order to protect civilians there.
The SAA deployed a large force around Jasim late on August, imposing a siege on ISIS terrorists in the town. Soon after the beginning of the siege, it was revealed that Jasim was under the de-facto control of the terrorist group.
The ongoing security operation in Jasim was not the first this year. Between August and September, the Syrian intelligence eliminated three of ISIS top leaders in Daraa in three separate operations.
